R.I.P. Beau Velasco
1978 - 2009

R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devastated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is, if not for you. We love you.

Beau Velasco, beloved brother, co-founding member, guitarist and vocalist of The Death Set, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009, in Brooklyn, New York. Beau co-wrote the Worldwide album and previous two EP's with Johnny Siera, with whom his partnership reaches back beyond The Death Set's beginnings, to Black Panda from the Gold Coast, Australia. The Death Set moved from Sydney to the US in 2005, but Beau took a back seat from touring a while later. This original core lineup of the band had recently rejoined to write and record the next record and to resume touring together.

Beau was also a talented artist, tattoo artist and jewelry designer. Working at Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg and Black Ink in Harlem. His artwork has been exhibited in Australia and America. There is a nice piece remembering him in the New York Village Voice. And Baltimore City Paper has published a warm piece with Johnny and Rabbit.

A wake and a beautiful memorial service at Saved Tattoo occurred in the days following Beau's passing in Brooklyn, friends and family gathering together from afar to cry out their love and to carry strength forward together. A memorial at Beau's family's farm in Australia took place on October 22 with help from longtime friend and bandmate Dan Walker.

There's a Flickr gallery that's been set up to collect photos of Beau. Please feel free to contribute any of your own memories.

This was The Death Set's first and last show together as the dream unit of Beau, Johnny, Dan, and Jah:

Our friend Emily Rabbit put this video together for the memorial in Australia:

A Japan and selected countries re-issue of our first two EP's with additional remixes coupled with a very bad ass bandana is available now!! Available from the Ninja Tune Site.

Puerto Rican festival next month and taking time to write the new record! All thoughts forward!

This is going to be rad...

We just moved to Philly so our friends at UBIQ are throwing a party to celebrate the release of our surivial kit through our friends awesome clothing label 3 Sixteen.

The pack includes an awesome T-shirt, hip flask, fitted cap, stencil and 7" etched limited edition vinyl!

We are super excited to collab with our friends doing awesome things.

No better way to celebrate than to also have our freinds Ninja Sonik from Brooklyn to come and play with us at UBIQ to celebrate this release.

So tell and bring all your friends, Philly, NY, Bmore and lets get loose. UBIQ parties been know to get crazy.

Come early and stay for the free bands and booze and peep the new pack.

Thanks!!

Johnny Siera
